Portrait of Owen Matola, full-stack software developer from Mzuzu, Malawi

About

I'm an ICT student at Mzuzu University, currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Information and Communication Technology. Before that, I completed diplomas in Computing and Information Systems (Levels 4 and 5) through the University of Malawi under ABMA.

My academic and project work spans full-stack web development — building with React, Next.js, NestJS, and Laravel — alongside a growing interest in cybersecurity, where I work through CTF challenges across cryptography and forensics to sharpen how I think about security at the system level, not just the application layer.

I'm currently interning as a software developer, building a multi-tenant feedback and support portal from the ground up — a NestJS microservices backend behind an authenticated API gateway, paired with Next.js frontends. It's given me hands-on experience with the kind of architecture decisions (tenant isolation, event-driven services, secure auth) that don't come up in coursework alone.

I care about building software that's secure and maintainable by default, not as an afterthought — clear boundaries between services, data that's scoped correctly from the start, and code that the next person (often future me) can actually follow. Longer term, I want to keep deepening both sides of that: shipping full-stack products and understanding how to break and defend them.

Projects

Multi-Tenant Client Feedback & Support Portal

In Development

A service-owned NestJS microservices platform with two Next.js frontends for multi-tenant customer feedback and support ticketing.

Problem solved: Gives organizations an isolated, secure space to collect customer feedback and manage support tickets, with strict tenant data isolation at every layer.

NestJS, Next.js, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, Redis, RabbitMQ, Docker, Prisma, JWT

Two Next.js frontends
API gateway — edge-only, no database. Verifies JWT, rate-limits, derives tenant context.
  • identity-serviceown Prisma schema
  • tenant-serviceown Prisma schema
  • ticket-serviceown Prisma schema
  • feedback-serviceown Prisma schema
  • notification-serviceown Prisma schema
RabbitMQ — transactional outbox relays publish with confirms; consumers dedupe by inbox event ID.

Experience

  1. Software Development Intern

    Aug 2026 — Present

    Infi-Tech, Malawi

Three-month internship (BICT 4706, Mzuzu University) building a multi-tenant client feedback & support portal SaaS as the core assessment project — a NestJS microservices backend with two Next.js frontends.

    • Designed and implemented subdomain-based multi-tenant routing
    • Built domain services (identity, tenant, ticket, feedback, notification) behind an authenticated API gateway
    • Implemented event-driven projections between services using RabbitMQ outbox/inbox patterns
    • Applied JWT-based auth with tenant-scoped authorization and secure refresh-token handling
    • Submitted weekly progress reports following the university's internship evaluation framework

NestJS, Next.js, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, Redis, RabbitMQ, Docker, JWT, Prisma

  2. Temporary Data Entry Clerk

    2023 — 2023

    World Vision Malawi, Malawi

Supported project teams by digitizing and verifying field data for accuracy.

    • Transferred data from paper formats into digital systems
    • Conducted data cleaning and verification
    • Supported project teams with accurate data management

    Microsoft Excel, Data Cleaning

  3. Temporary Data Entry Clerk

    2022 — 2022

Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB), Malawi

Digitized examination records supplied directly by supervisors and examiners.

    • Transferred examination data from paper formats into computer files
    • Typed in data provided directly from supervisors and/or examiners
    • Created spreadsheets handling large volumes of figures and data without errors

    Microsoft Excel, Data Entry
